Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations
- ACS - Analyzer Control Station
- ASTM - American Society for Testing and Materials
- Boiler - A closed vessel in which water or other fluid is heated. The heated or vaporized fluid exits the boiler for use in various processes or heating applications. The source of heat for a boiler is combustion of any of several fuels, such as wood, coal, oil, or natural gas.
- BTU - British Thermal Unit; a unit of energy used in the power, steam generation, heating, and air conditioning industries
- Californium - Chemical element with the symbol Cf and atomic number 98. The isotope californium-252 is the most commonly used neutron source for industrial applications of neutron-induced gamma-ray spectroscopy. The half-life of californium is 2.6 years; therefore a californium-252 source is typically replenished every two-and-one-half years by adding one-half of the original loading of californium-252.
- Cement Kiln - A horizontally sloping steel furnace, lined with firebrick, turning about one to three revolutions per minute. Central to the production of cement.
- Chemical Element - A pure chemical substance consisting of one type of atom
- Clinker - Clinker is the solid material produced by the cement kiln stage that has sintered into lumps or nodules, typically of diameter 3-25 mm. Clinker is ground, usually with the addition of gypsum, to become Portland cement.
- Conveyor - A continuous moving belt that transports large volumes of material
- DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
- DOE - Department of Energy
- EIA - Energy Information Administration
- Elemental Analysis- Process where material (e.g., coal, limestone, iron) is analyzed for its elemental composition
- Feedstock - Raw material supplied to a machine or processing plant
- Isotopes - Different types of atoms of the same chemical element, each having a different atomic mass. Isotopes of an element have nuclei with the same number of protons (the same atomic number) but different numbers of neutrons.
- KFUI - Kiln Feed Uniformity Index
- LSF - Lime Saturation Factor: parameter used in describing clinker characteristics
- MSHA - Mine Safety and Health Administration
- Mt - Million tons
- MW - Mega Watt
- mR - millirem: one thousandth of a rem, often used for radiation dosages commonly encountered
- NOC - SABIA Network Operations Center
- NRC - U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
- NTP - Network Time Protocol
- ORNL - Oak Ridge National Laboratory
- PGNAA - Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis: a technique for determining the presence and amount of elements in a material
- PLC - Programmable Logic Controller
- Portland Cement - The most common type of cement in general use around the world
- PRB - Powder River Basin: a major coal producing geologic basin in the U.S.
- Preparation Plant - Facility at which coal is crushed, screened, and mechanically cleaned
- PSTN - Public Switched Telephone Network
- Refractory - Material that retains its strength at high temperatures: used in e.g. furnaces and kilns
- REM - A unit of radiation dose
- RIAR - Research Institute of Atomic Reactors
- RSO - Radiation Safety Officer
- Slurry - A mixture of water and any of several finely crushed solids, e.g. cement, clay, or coal
- Stockpile - A pile or storage location for bulk materials, forming part of the bulk materials handling process
- VPN - Virtual Private Network
